United Way of Central Indiana: ReadUP Volunteer

 

As a ReadUP Volunteer, I trained to provide struggling readers in third and fourth grade with individualized literacy interventions to help build phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension skills. 

 

The individualized tutoring I provided helped the students I work with get on track - and stay on track - with sufficient grade-level literacy in order to pass the English Language Arts portion of the ISTEP.

 

By third-grade, students who aren’t on track with reading are more likely to drop out. Because of this, I am passionate about my desire to help these kids remain in school through my tutoring. With the help of volunteers like myself, students who participate in the ReadUP program score 37 percent higher on reading comprehension tests than their peers.
