Study Abroad: China
During the Summer of 2014 I enrolled in a study abroad program with the Sociology department at IUPUI. Part of the program involved a three week trip to China that allowed me to focus on an independent research project of my choosing. I decided to conduct research on the strengths and weaknesses of Chinese primary and secondary education (especially English education) and compare the results with that of American education. I spent the first week in Beijing and the last two weeks in Guangzhou. While in Guangzhou, I spent much of my time visiting local schools both public and private. I interviewed students and teachers. I observed classroom enviroments and teaching methodologies. The research I conducted culminated in a final paper at the end of the course.
My time spent in China was one of the best experiences I have had in my life. I thouroughly enjoyed the food, the culture, the people, and the geography. The Chinese students and teachers I encountered were some of the most intelligent and thoughtful people I've met and I am grateful that I was able to established lasting friendships while I was there. The knowldege I aquired has proved to be extremely useful in applying it to my understanding of diverse educational methodologies and formats.
