English and Linguistics Research
Investment of Generation 1.5:
Transfer Challenges and Social Strategic Success
This paper is the culmination of a group research project from a second language acquisition course I took. Here our group conducted a mini-case study examining the role of social identity in second language acquisition. Our research revolved around a volunteer participant who had relocated to the United States from China as a teenager. We interviewed the participant and produced a transcription of the dialogue. The transcription served as empirical data supporting our hypothesis which stated that language learning should be approached based on the individual's identity and not through a one-size-fits-all model.

Cross-Cultrual and Intercultural Variations in Compliment Behavior
After reading the sociolinguistic work of Dr. Robert Herbert I gained an interest in the compliment behavior of university students. I spent the majority of a course in sociolinguistics conducting research on this subject and this paper was the final result of that research. In an effort to contribute to the body of research that I had encountered I decided to collect data while on the IUPUI campus using a method known as rapid anonymous observation. I used the data I collected to compare and contrast it with the findings of Robert Herbert. My final analysis confirmed my hypothesis that linguistic differences between speech communities tend to become more pronounced the further away they are from each other relative to proximal location.

On Semantic Properties of Entities:
Specificity and Boundedness
After examining research done by William Frawley on how the English language encodes specificity and boundedness within nouns, I wrote this paper to synthesize the information I learned. The linguistic study of semantics is one of my favorite areas of inquiry because of its highly theoretical concepts. Uncovering the building blocks of meaning encoded within English has helped me better appreciate the intricacies of the links between the language and the meanings it encodes.
